Most history starts with a find.<\/strong>
\nSo what happens when you start with an urban myth?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Today the Thames riverboat pilots tell the story of\u00a0Waterloo Bridge being built by women during the Second\u00a0World War, they kept the story alive since the 1950s. However, no official\u00a0 <\/span>record of this history existed as historian Professor Christine Wall discovered after years of\u00a0trawling through the archives.<\/p>\n

In 2005, film-makers Karen Livesey and Jo Wiser joined the search, making\u00a0an oral history film of the journey to find these women.<\/p>\n

The Ladies Bridge documentary\u00a0also explores why these bridge\u00a0builders and many thousands of female construction workers had been written out of history.<\/p>\n

It was not until 2015, with a crucial interview\u00a0from the The Ladies Bridge documentary and\u00a0Prof Wall’s find of three photographs, that Historic England officially acknowledged womens contribution to the building of the bridge with a listing.<\/p>\n

BLUE PLAQUE\u00a0CAMPAIGN<\/h2>\n

The LIGHT UP THE LADIES’ BRIDGE \u00a0event, the 2015 Historic England listing \u00a0and a petition have led to English Heritage considering the placement of a blue plaque on Waterloo Bridge.<\/p>\n
